Holidays in French Guiana
Guyana is an overseas department belonging to the French Republic. It is therefore subject to the respect of French law, just like the other French DOM-TOM. As a result, it has the same public holidays, except for traditional local festivals.
In 2015, a law was presented to the French Parliament to change some dates concerning certain holidays and holidays in Guyana, to reflect other religions and cultures. Although this legislation has been approved, no action has been taken at the local level to change the holidays currently celebrated.

French Guiana celebrates French National Day
Located in the North-East of South America, French Guiana (different from Guyana) is nevertheless part of France and the European Union. Despite its remoteness and great ethnic and linguistic diversity, French Guiana is truly integrated with France and celebrates the same holidays as in France, starting with the celebration of the national holiday of July 14th.
The French national holiday is also known as the "national holiday". It was on this date that the prison of the Bastille was stormed in 1789 during the French Revolution. This revolution also led to the abolition of slavery throughout the French Empire, including French Guiana, which had been colonized until then.
While the biggest celebration of the Bastille is celebrated in the heart of Paris, this day is also a great event all over the world, especially in New Orleans, French Polynesia, Liege in Belgium and Cayenne, capital of the French Guiana.
It is also in this city that are the main celebrations of the national holiday on the island. You will be able to admire the impressive colorful parades, the fireworks, the mythical game of the island concerning the French national anthem, "la Marseillaise", and many other events celebrating France in its entirety.
These celebrations prove once again the attachment that the inhabitants of Guyana have for their country which is so far away, geographically speaking.
June 10: A landmark date for Guyanese
On June 10 of each new year, French Guyana celebrates the Day of Abolition, also called Emancipation Day. Indeed, it was in 1848 that everything changed for the Guyanese: the abolition of slavery and, at the same time, the end of colonization by many colonizing countries, including France.
But this holiday began to be really celebrated only from 2012.
Historically, the French had colonized, now called, French Guiana in the late 1700s, then lost to Portugal in 1809, before retaking it in 1814.
It was at this time that black African slaves were imported to this colonized island to work in the sugar and spice plantations under dire conditions.
But April 27, 1848 marks a turning point. The French government abolishes slavery in France and therefore at the same time, all its possessions abroad. This is the end of a nightmare for all Guyanese slaves, which lasted nearly half a century.
To know that this happy news did not reach them until the 10 of June of the same year. It is for this reason that June 10 was chosen as a holiday rather than April 27.
The abolition of slavery has had a considerable impact on life in French Guiana. The descendants of these slaves are still today very grateful to their ancestors during the celebration of this day.
This day is also now used to remind the people of Guyana of the value of freedom and to encourage people to take things in their own hands through various measures, to abolish other social abuses still present in 2018, or to work for social change.
Every year Guyana celebrates 12 paid statutory holidays and 6 other unpaid holidays that are recognized.
