Public Holidays USA 2018 And 2019

Of the ten national holidays listed in the United States, some are common to most countries of the world, such as Christmas, New Year's Day or Labor Day (1st Monday in September in the United States). However, most are original and commemorate events unique to the history of this country.

Holidays in the United States: some peculiarities

 Most holidays have been arranged so that they do not fall on a weekend. Thus, they are celebrated on slightly variable dates. In the case of fixed date holidays, everything is planned: if the day is a Sunday, the following Monday will be a holiday. If it's a Saturday, it's the previous Friday that will be off. Another American originality: there may be additional local holidays linked to the traditions of the different states.

US holidays dedicated to personalities

Some iconic characters in the history of the United States are honored by a holiday. Thus, the birth of Pastor Martin Luther King, defender of the black community and murdered in 1968, is celebrated on the third Monday of January. "President Day", the third Monday in February, pays tribute to George Washington, the first president of the United States and Abraham Lincoln, hero of the American Civil War. Columbus is also honored on the second Monday of October at Columbus Day.

Holidays related to American historical events

 The last Monday in May is Memorial Day, a tribute day to veterans. On July 4th, "Independence Day", a national holiday, celebrates the country's independence from England, declared in 1776. The "Veterans Day" commemorates the Armistice of November 11, 1918. However, the most popular holiday in the United States is undoubtedly "Thanksgiving", a day of thanksgiving celebrating the first harvest obtained by American settlers from England on the famous Mayflower in 1620. The turkey is the traditional dish eaten at this occasion, the 4th Thursday of November.

Paradoxically, in a country where the Christian faith is very important, religious holidays are not busy, except for Christmas Day.

The distribution of holidays in Canada In Canada, holidays are divided into two main blocks. On the one hand official holidays, ten in number, recognized throughout the federal territory. Holidays in Peru: moments of festivity Peru has 13 public holidays every year, during which people participate in events or festivities as part of their religion or history.
