Holidays in Haiti
Every year, 15 holidays are counted in Haiti, days where the population does not work and can invest in festivities. On this French-speaking territory located in the Caribbean, the majority of the inhabitants are Catholics, and another part Protestants. A minority also practices voodoo. The holidays granted are thus mostly religious holidays, but some have also been set up to celebrate dates that have marked the history of the population.

Flag Day in Haiti
May 18 is a holiday in Haiti, the first independent black republic, with reference to May 18, 1803, a date that will have marked the country. That day, the first Haitian flag was sewn by Catherine Flon, in an effort to represent the union of each inhabitant.

The blue color symbolizes the black inhabitants, and the red the Mulattos. According to legend, Governor General Jean-Jacques Dessalines took a French flag in full revolution and tore the white center, before asking Catherine Flon, his niece, to sew the two remaining colors.

She would have thus executed herself, and would have elaborated this flag with her hair, having no thread to sew it. This holiday is, from now on, always awaited by the population, since it represents the birth of the flag of Haiti.

Since then, every year, the country celebrates this date, with music and traditional dances. Flags are also hanging on the vehicles, and parades are organized in the cities.

Other events are also organized, such as concerts, exhibitions, and food stands are stored outside to introduce tourists to local gastronomy.
